Presentation of the Order of Merit to Dr. Teresita T. Tumapon

On 26 January 2017, Ambassador Dr. Gordon Kricke presented the Cross of the Order of Merit (Verdienstkreuz am Bande) of the Federal Republic of Germany to Philippine national Teresita Tanhueco Tumapon, PhD, of Cagayan de Oro City. The award was bestowed upon her by Federal President Joachim Gauck in recognition of her outstanding achievements for the German-Philippine cooperation in the field of higher education and for the promotion of German as a foreign language in the Philippines.

Ceremonial Handover of Scholarship Grants to DAAD-SEARCA Scholars

Fourteen Southeast Asian nationals from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar received a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship grant through the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) to pursue or continue their graduate studies at the University of the Philippines Los Baños for the current school year. The ceremonial handing over of five of these grants was held by Ambassador-designate Dr. Gordon Kricke at a luncheon hosted at the German Club Manila.

Not Bare Anymore: Buddy Bears All Dressed Up

The German Embassy Manila is proud to announce that the Buddy Bears in Manila have finally been dressed for the occasion as the unofficial ambassadors of Germany – promoting messages of peace and friendship. From the Buddy Bear design competition held earlier this year, nine outstanding artists have submitted their entries with various interpretations of German-Philippine relations and cooperation.

Goethe-Institut Philippinen and Liceo de Cagayan University (LdCU) High School extended their partnership to promote the continuous teaching and learning of German language upon the signing of another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 22, 2016 by both parties. The renewal of the MoU paves the way for further strengthening of the cooperation under the program "Schools: Partners of the Future" (PASCH) of Germany´s Federal Foreign Office.

Conference on Climate Change in Micronesia

Germany supported the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau by funding a quadrilateral conference in Pohnpei, Micronesia, where the participating states can coordinate their political agendas for the upcoming climate change negotiations in Paris and expand their capacities on how to access funds for adaptation and mitigation measures.

Twelve Southeast Asian nationals from four different countries received a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship grant through the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) to pursue their graduate studies at the University of the Philippines Los Baños for the current school year. The ceremonial handing over of eight grants was held by Ambassador Thomas Ossowski at a luncheon hosted at the German Club Manila.

On 21 September, Germany-based violin wunderkind Joaquin Maria “Chino” Gutierrez took center stage at the residence of German Ambassador Thomas Ossowski. Accompanied by renowned pianist Greg Zuniega, he showcased works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Joachim, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The formidable programme further included pieces like Dr. José Rizal-Kabayao´s “La Deportacion”, Maurice Ravel´s “Tzigane” and “La Capricieuse” by Edward Elgar.

Climate change/chance: The time is now

Climate Diplomacy Day is celebrated on 17 June. Germany together with EU partners France and the United Kingdom is conducting a worldwide Climate Diplomacy Day to raise awareness for climate change and the need for joint action. In the Philippines, a newspaper article by ambassadors of several EU embassies was published to mark this special occasion.

European Climate Diplomacy Day 2015 in Berlin: Germany, France and the UK in discussion

On 17 June, European Embassies around the globe are celebrating Climate Diplomacy Day for the second time. Climate Diplomacy Day aims to raise awareness for climate change and the need for joint action. Over the past year, Germany, France and the UK have launched joint projects under the umbrella of Climate Diplomacy Day in over 30 countries.

Ambassador Ossowski visits the Marshall Islands

German Ambassador Thomas Ossowski presented his letters of credence to His Excellency the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Christopher Loeak, in the capital city of Majuro. During his visit, Ambassador Ossowski reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to work together with the Marshall Islands in order to achieve substantial results at the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris in November 2015.

From Day One after Yolanda until today: solid German support for rehabilitation continues

Since the onset of Yolanda, Germany has been relentless in the outpour of support for those devastated by the typhoon. German humanitarian relief organizations have been among the first who reached the Philippines from abroad to help the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. Until today, German relief organizations have been working non-stop in the typhoon-stricken areas.

German Parliamentary State Secretary Hans-Joachim Fuchtel visits the Philippines

Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Mr. Hans-Joachim Fuchtel paid an official visit to the Philippines from 27 to 29 October 2014.   The State Secretary was received by Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario. He held political talks also with National Economic Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan and Department of Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran.

German football All-Stars play vs Philippine football greats in Manila

German football all-stars and former national team players were in Manila to play the football greats of the Philippines last October 18 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The German squad – composed of 1990 FIFA World Champion Guido Buchwald and 1996 European Champion Dieter Eilts, among others, displayed superb football skills as they triumphed 13-0 against the Philippine selection.

12th German Ambassador’s Cup

The 12th German Ambassador’s Cup was successfully held on 11 October 2014 at Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna. The tournament, organized by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI) together with the German Embassy Manila, was made distinct by this year’s celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and the Philippines.

A reception hosted by German Ambassador to the Philippines Thomas Ossowski on the 03 of October at the Sofitel Hotel in Manila celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and the Philippines. About 600 distinguished guests from the fields of politics, business and culture attended the reception. Mr. Michael Glos, former German Minister for Economics and Technology, had come from Germany to convey greetings of the German people on this festive occasion.

More than 250 health facilities to benefit from German grant after Typhoon Yolanda

The German government has provided 2,8 million Euros (Php 160 million) for medical equipment and supplies of healthcare facilities affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013. More than 70 Hospitals and 170 Rural Health Units in region 4B and the Visayas will benefit from the project.

WASH facilities for Typhoon Haiyan victims

The aid organization arche noVa is one of many German organizations that helped to provide relief assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). It specifically focuses in the provision of WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) facilities. The German Federal Foreign Office has provided 140,000 Euro (about Php 8.2 million) for the relief operations of arche noVa in the Philippines.

Ambassador Ossowski visits development project benefitting farmers

Ambassador Ossowski witnessed German development cooperation activities during his trip to the province of Negros. In the mountain community of Patag he visited farmers participating in the programme "Ourfood", through which farmers learn to expand their income by changing to high value crops and meeting the high standards for organic food of supermarkets.

The images of the catastrophic aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda (International Name Haiyan), one of the strongest typhoons recorded to make landfall and presumably one of the most destructive, have rendered from the German community a strong spirit of solidarity with the Filipino people and have launched a massive campaign to provide humanitarian aid and relief to the victims of the supertyphoon.   The disaster wrought by Haiyan has mobilized the different sectors of Germany– from government, the business sector, as well as the general public to reach out to the Philippines and offer help.

The German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has set up a water purification system and started the distribution of drinking water fit for more than 30,000 people daily for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda in Santa Fe in Bantayan Island, Cebu.
