For more than 75 years now, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been committed to advancing academic relations between Germany and other countries as well as, more generally, to promoting the fields of education, science, culture and research. The 200 and more programmes of the DAAD pursues range from short-term exchanges for research or teaching purposes through to doctoral scholarships lasting several years for graduates from developing countries, from information visits by delegations of foreign university vice chancellors through to the long-term regional programmes conceived to establish efficient higher education systems in the Third World.

The aim of the foundation is to award research followships and research awards to highly qualified academics. Annualy about 500 grants are awarded worldwide to allow foreign junior scholars with at least a Ph.D. and who have a number of scientific pubilcations to carry out a long-term research project of their own choice at a German research insitute. Applicants should not be more than 40, respectively 45 years of age.
Since 1953, a total of 27 scholarships have been awarded to Philippine nationals. The AvH maintains contact with former AvH scholars by inviting them to spend further short periods conducting research in Germany, by donation of academic literature and scientific equipment and by grants towards printing costs and the cost of attending academic conferences .
