Palau and Germany - Old Ties and New Relationships

This special photo exhibit is taking place at the Belau National Museum in the Republic of Palau from 1 October 2011 to 30 September 2012. The exhibit showcases the milestones in the relationship between Germany and Palau. The exhibit with stations in Koror/Palau, Kokopo/Papua-Newguinea, Porirua near Wellington/New Zealand and Apia/Samoa is supported with a total of 80.000 Euros from the Federal Foreign Ministry of Germany.

For more than 80 years contact between Germany and Palau was minimal. But Germany was among the first countries to recognize Palau’s independence. Diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Palau and the Federal Republic of Germany on November 11, 1997. The German Ambassador in Manila (The Philippines) is also accredited to the Republic of Palau.

Pedro Pangelinan Ada and his wife Maria Crisostomo Martinez were the only Pacific Islanders to gain German citizenship during the German period

Augustin Krämer's (1865-1941) writings on Samoa and on Palau, to name the two most important fields of his research, are of particular importance as they preserve much original material that was in danger of being erased from memory.

From May 31 to July 2, 2010 Germany played host to a group of diplomats from the Caribbean and Pacific. The Federal Foreign Office had invited young career diplomats from the Caribbean and Pacific region to Berlin for a training course.
